About License Plate Recognition (LPR)

License Plate Recognition (LPR) is a surveillance method that uses optical character recognition (OCR) on images to identify vehicles by their license plates. Since every vehicle carries a unique license plate, no external cards, barcodes, tags or transmitters are needed in order for a vehicle to be recognized. LPR is also referred to as:

  • Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR)
  • Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

License Plate Recognition Efficiency

Recent software innovations have made LPR systems much more reliable.  In a majority of cases, a LPR system strongly enhances existing security systems. LPR uses optical character recognition (OCR) and must be adapted to the country in which the cameras are installed due to different license plate designs and languages. Many other factors influence the efficiency of an LPR system, such as:
